SOLNTSEV Konstantin Aleksandrovich,
Academician of the Russian academy of sciences

K.A. Solntsev — scientific director of Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Material Sciences of RAS, academician of the RAS is a prominent scholar in the field of chemistry and engineering of nonorganic materials, institutor of science and author of more than 330 scientific papers and 34 inventions.

Academician K.A. Solntsev has formulated a new scientific trend — Oxidative Engineering of a Thin-Walled Ceramics (OETWC), in the context of which new fundamental laws of the process of formation of compact ceramics products directly under oxidation of given metal forms have been identified. This allowed to manufacture such ceramic products as filaments, heaters, high temperature gas filters, heat exchangers and honeycomb blocks for automotive catalytic converters etс. The process of catalytic coatings formation with high-surface area has been developed.

The technology of cellular and fibrous ceramic products for photocatalytic treatment of gas and liquid flows has been developed. For this purpose, the process of transformation of cellular and fibrous compact OETWC ceramics based on rutile into active phases of anatase and brunite with photocatalytic activity up to 78% has been developed.

Under the guidance of the Academician K.A. Solntsev, a technology of transparent ceramics based on yttrium oxide has been developed for use as active elements of lasers. The regularities of the formation of sodium polyaluminates with the structure of beta-alumina from metastable forms of aluminum oxide, intended for the manufacture of ceramic elements of solid electrolytes, have been identified.

K.A. Solntsev combines fruitful research with sustained organizational activities. In the period of 1998 – 2007, he headed the Institute of Physical and Chemical Problems of Ceramic Materials of the Russian Academy of Sciences, from 2008 to 2018 he worked as Director of the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMET RAS), and in the period from 2000 to 2016 he held the post of the Deputy President-Manager of the RAS. Since 2012 he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Sciences of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

K.A. Solntsev is the Editor-in-Chief of the journals "Inorganic Materials", "Inorganic Materials. Applied Research" and "Material Science," member of the Editorial Board of a number of academic journals, and deputy academician-secretary of the Department of Chemistry and Materials Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
